In case you missed the memo, sunflower season in Maryland is kinda a big deal.
If Maryland were to change its state flower from the Black-Eyed Susan to any other flower, I’d say it should be a sunflower! Typically between late August and early October, my Instagram feed is flooded with pictures of people who have flocked to the sunflower fields to get their picture taken. I can’t recall a time someone has seemed nearly as eager to get their picture taken with a Black-Eyed Susan, though!
Once you get to a sunflower field, you will understand why they’re so hyped up. They grow to a mature height of 4-6 feet tall and their heads are about the same size as mine! But what’s most incredible about seeing a sunflower field in person during peak bloom, is when you get a glimpse of them all together facing the same direction, and from a far-away view, they become a sea of yellow. It’s breathtaking. Don’t you agree?
Frolicking in sunflower fields: my favorite summer tradition!
Year after year I come back to the sunflower fields in Maryland. It NEVER gets old.
Tips if you have never visited a Maryland during sunflower season before:
- Confirm when the sunflowers will be in bloom, and where the field is located.
- Some farmers rotate where their sunflower field will be every other year, such as Clear Meadow Farm in Harford County. I’m guessing they switch up the crops because it’s good for the soil? To be on the safe side, check out their website first.

- Bring Cash
- I’ve been turned away before because I didn’t have cash on me to pay the entrance fee. To be on the safe side, bring $10 per person.

- Go on a weekday to watch the sunset.
- The fields are typically PACKED on the weekends! Also, the best sunsets are on days when it’s partly cloudy.
