This holiday season, drink like you’re on vacation–in Europe! I was inspired to make a single serving of mulled wine, also known as spiced wine, after recently visiting the pop-up Christmas Village in Baltimore. Most recipes instruct you to make enough to serve 6 people at a time, but my version makes just enough to fit in a mug, so you can enjoy this winter treat even if you’re not entertaining.
What I love the most about this beverage is that before you even taste it, you can smell the aromatic spices like cinnamon and nutmeg fill the air, and because it is served warm, it makes you feel all cozy. It’d be perfect to sip on after a day of skiing, or while watching a holiday movie.
Hope you enjoy it!
If you enjoy making single serving beverages, then you’ll want to try out my single serving bloody mary recipe next. My “Bombin’ Bloody” is made with chili pepper vodka, so it has a little kick! It has a sweet rim and all the fixin’s too.

Fun facts about mulled wine:
- Fruit wines, such as blueberry wine and cherry wine, are occasionally used instead of grape wine in some parts of Germany.
- Dry reds are typically used for mulling, such as Zinfandel, Merlot, Malbec, or Cabernet Sauvignon. You can also use a white that’s not too acidic, such as a Viognier, an oaked Chardonnay, or dry Riesling.
- Mulled wine originated in Rome in the 2nd century.
- March 3rd is National Mulled Wine Day.
- Mulled wine goes by different names, depending on the country of origin. For instance, it’s called glögg in Sweden, glühwein in Germany (pronounced glue•vein), grzaniec galicyjski in Poland, vin brûlé in Italy, and vin chaud in France.
