In the months of September through December, pomegranates are readily available at grocery stores. I’ve taken full advantage of pomegranate season this year, and have become quite the pro at de-seeding a pomegranate. There are many ways to get the seeds out, but my preferred method is below.
How to de-seed a pomegranate
- Score the outside into quarters and pull apart.
- In a bowl of water, pick out the seeds from the membrane.
- Since the white membrane will float to the top, skim it off the surface using a mesh strainer, otherwise just pour that into the sink.
- Finally, strain the pomegranate seeds in a colander with the water running to get any remaining membrane pieces off. If you see any of the white specs sticking to the seeds, just pick it off.
