Choosing Mind Over Matter
Lately, I’ve been wearing more funky prints and bright colors to add cheer to working from home and wintertime blues.
If your mood can be affected by the color clothes you wear, then guess what? This same principle applies to your food. If your food looks drab, you will probably feel “blah” afterward. As the saying goes, “You are what you eat!” Shine from the inside-out.
How to boost your mood through food
#1: Fuel yourself with visually stimulating bright colored food and drinks.
If you’re looking for some ideas, here are some previous recipes I’ve shared that burst with color:
#2: Increase your intake of foods proven to enhance mood.
- Omega-3 fatty acids: Alaskan salmon, walnuts, flax and chia seeds
- Probiotics: Kombucha, yogurt, pickled vegetables
- Vitamin D: Cheese, egg yolks, milk, orange juice
- Vitamin B: Whole Grains such as steel-cut oatmeal, quinoa, and wild rice, along with folate-rich vegetables
#3: Incorporate variety into your diet.
Eating the same thing over and over again gets old real quick. Seek out ingredients you’ve never heard of!
#4: Consider how your food is presented.
If your dishes are chipped, dull, or scratched up, why are you holding onto them? Do they spark joy? If buying a new dish set is not in your budget, then look at Craigslist or Goodwill to see what gems you can find. I’ve found some of my favorite pieces at thrift stores, and they make me smile every time I use them.

(To make this with a blender that doesn’t have super sharp blades, just let the ice cubes sit out on the counter for 10 minutes so they can get crushed easier.)
